How to make Appam

    Ingredients to make Appam :

  • 2 cups Rice washed
  • 1 cup Parboiled/ boiled/ idli Rice
  • 1/2 cup Poha/aval (parched Rice) or cooked Rice
  • 1 cup Coconut (grated)
  • 1/2 tsp Dry active Yeast
  • 2 tbs Sugar
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • Oil as required

    How to make Appam :

  • Soak rice and parboiled rice in water for 4-5 hours.
  • Drain and grind together with grated coconut, cooked rice or poha/aval, dry active yeast,sugar and salt.
  • Add some water and grind all ingredients for a smooth batter.
  • Pour the batter in a large bowl and keep aside for fermenting for 8-12 hours.
  • The next day the batter will increase in volume and rise.
  • Heat oil in a kadai or an appam pan.
  • Spread a spoonful of the batter. Cover the pan and let it cook till the base becomes light golden
  • Serve the appams hot or warm with vegetable stew or sweetened coconut milk.
