How to Cook Brown Rice Upma

Ingredients for Brown Rice Upma :

  • 130 gm brown basmati rice
  • 2 teaspoon urad dal
  • 2 tablespoon toor daal
  • 1/2 handful curry leaves
  • 60 gm grated coconut
  • 2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 3 tablespoon refined oil
  • 3 green chilli
  • 1 pinch asafoetida
  • water as required
  • 4 tablespoon chick peas

How to Cook Brown Rice Upma :

  1. To prepare this delectable breakfast recipe, start by putting the brown rice in a grinder and ground it to the consistency of semolina (coarsely). Then, soak the ground brown rice in water for an hour. Simultaneously, soak the tool daal in water for 20 minutes, and then grind it coarsely. Also, chop the green chilies and keep aside.
  2. Now, take a pressure cooker over medium flame and heat oil in it. When the oil is hot enough, add the mustard seeds. As they start to splutter, add the asafoetida, chickpeas, urad dal, and curry leaves to the cooker. When they turn golden brown, add the ground toor dal and the grated coconut.
  3. Mix them together and saute for a couple of minutes. Next, add the ground brown rice along with a little water and salt. Pressure cook for 1 whistle and then, let it simmer for 4-6 minutes.
  4. When the pressure recedes, mix the contents and add a little pepper according to taste. Transfer it to a serving bowl and garnish with a couple curry leaves.
